Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about GitHits. If you have more questions, feel free to reach out to our support team.

General

How does GitHits differ from other search tools?

Most search tools return a large number of results that you need to go through manually. Often, this is a process that you need to repeat multiple times to find relevant information.

GitHits does all this for you and more.

GitHits compiles the most relevant example based on your query, ranking search results based on their usefulness, relevance, and real-world applicability and other factors. This is done using a reasoning layer that understands the context of your query and that actually reads the sources to generate a complete example.

This leads to a significant reduction in time spent searching, debugging, and discovering how to solve problems.

But doesn't Cursor / GitHub Copilot / some other IDE already provide this?

No, GitHits provides real, validated code examples from open-source projects. Cursor and other tools generate code based on patterns in their training data and local context, which is often outdated or incomplete.

How fresh is the data?

Currently, we provide only the latest information from open-source projects in real-time.

Technical

What programming languages are supported?

GitHits supports all major and some smaller programming, scripting, configuration and markup languages, almost 800 in total. However, the quality of results may vary depending on the language.

GitHits can and might from time-to-time refer to code examples in other languages when relevant; the system is designed to be flexible in this regard.

Can I use GitHits in my IDE?

Yes! We have an MCP server. Check out our MCP documentation to get started.

Privacy and Security

How is my data handled?

We store the queries you make to improve our service, but we do not share your data with third parties.

Is my search history private?

Yes, your search history is private and not shared with other users.

What about software licenses?

By default, GitHits excludes copyleft-licensed code from search results (strict mode) to help you avoid restrictive licenses. You can change this to yolo (no filtering) or custom (your own blocklist) in your account settings under Preferences. Each search result includes the license SPDX ID of the source, so you always know what license applies.
